An error occurred while trying to share a folder on Server 2008

On attempt to share a new folder I came across the error “An error occurred while trying to share [NewFolderName] there are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper”.

After hours of trawling the web and server (2008 R2 Standard) I realised Windows Firewall and Base Filtering Engine were missing from Services completely. So this is the first place to check if you cannot share a new folder, to open Services you want to press start, right click Computer and press manage or hit your Server Manager shortcut, then click Configuration in the left hand menu and then click on Services. From here you can view alphabetically services running, and you may find both Windows Firewall and Base Filtering Engine missing.

If this is the case, what solved it for me was running a full scan using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which can be downloaded for free here Run a custom scan with all drives selected and all tick boxes ticked. During the scan a trojan called “trojan.0access” was found on the server and once removed and rebooted both the missing services returned and started automatically and I was able to share new folders.

I hope this helps at least one person save a lot of time.
